The government gives the health sector high priority in order to provide all Saudi citizens with free, high standard health care.
The total number of hospitals managed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) at the end of 1993 was 174, with a total of 25,918 beds (see table 9). The number of hospitals run by government agencies other than the Ministry of Health was 32 at the end of 1993, with a capacity of 7,338 beds. The number of primary health care centers rose from 1640 in 1989 to 1,707 in 1993.

The size of labor force in the health care sector grew rapidly during the fifth development plan period as to commensurate with the overall expansion of health services. The number of doctors increased by 22.7 percent from 22,633 in 1989 to 27,774 in 1993 (see table 10). The total number of nurses increased from 45,840 in 1989 to 57,090 in 1993. Health technicians' number rose from 25,192 in 1989 to 28662 in 1993. The proportion of these positions filled by Saudi nationals is very low. Saudi nationals represent 13 percent, 11.2 percent and 38 percent of doctors, nurses and health technicians respectively. The health care sector is one where the rate of Saudization should be the highest.
